I believe the child is John's son Robert Scott, as he was born in 1921, Caroline died January of 1923, and John's daughter Edith Carolyn wasn't born until July of 1923. Identification is confirmed also by my father Scott Rutledge (b1952).
Date of photo: Robert Scott Rutledge was born in February of 1921. The foliage in the background indicates a warmer season so it must have been taken either by the fall of 1921 or the spring of 1922. Based on the apparent age of the child, I am suggesting autumn of 1921.
Multi-generational photos are a real treat, especially when four generations are captured. Caroline was born in Ogle County, Illinois in 1840 when that part of the "Western United States" was still being pioneered. To think of all that has changed during the births and lives of these four individuals is amazing, and can be captured in one simple moment such as this.
