Marriage Certificate for Thomas & Elizabeth
Information
Scanned photocopy of the marriage certificate for Thomas Paterson Rutledge and Elizabeth Foster. Provided to me by Foster F. Rutledge in his collection of research material.
"This certifies that the rite of Holy Matrimony was celebrated between Thomas Rutledge of (blank) and Elizabeth Foster of (blank) on February 14th 1832 at Toronto C.W. by Rev. Mr Corsen
Witness (blank) Witness (blank)"
'C.W.' means 'Canada West', one of the many names of Ontario which also included 'Upper Canada'. Neither individual has a place of residence listed on this certificate. We know the ceremony took place in Toronto, likely the village. Similarly, no witnesses have signed this document.
While witnesses are not on the document, they were there. I was able to locate a transcription of the marriage register, and the witnesses are listed as "John Hawkins" and "William Johnson". I believe these to be the brothers-in-law of Thomas' father Robert, husbands of Eliza and Mary Rutledge, respectively.
This further supports the theory that Robert did indeed live near and had regular contact with his siblings in North America. [TR Feb 2015]
