Forster Rutledge

Forster Rutledge
General Information
Of Ballymagirril, Co. Cavan. (Burke)

James's son Forster is indirectly mentioned in the Chronicles of the Clark Family, Volume II, written 1879:
"William had three sons and three daughters, John, Andrew (noted for his fun and mischief), James, Susan, Alice, and Grace. A son of James is now (1879) probably on the old homestead."
I believe this to be an indirect reference to son Forster, who did end up with the land. The author, Katharine Clark-Mullikin, probably did not have contact with James or Forster when writing her history in '79, and may not have known that Forster had died by then.

In Burke's History: "b.25th December, 1816, s. his father, m. Elizabeth..."
I am interested in the meaning of "s." in this example. It cannot mean "son of" his father, as it is not used with the other boys. I currently assume it means "survivor" or "sole heir", as we know that Forster was the only son who remained in Ireland and acquired the family farmland. I will hear other opinions in developing these relationships, of course.

1901 Census of Ireland: Not present, having deceased. Author opinion is that Elizabeth is living in House #5 of the Ballymagirril return:
Head of family, 82yo, shop keeper, widow, born Co Leitrim.
Form A, House 5, contains Elizabeth's signature.
Living with daughter, Martha Rutledge, 26yo, born Co Cavan, most certainly the family of Forster Rutledge (b.1816) and already deceased.
Landholder is Richard Rutledge (her son).
